Sunday July 25

Today we all arrived at Rhederoord and were very impressed by the beautiful location. To warm up we played games with balls to learn each others namens and then spent the rest of the afternoon listening to everyone perform. Some payed solo, but most were accompanied by pianist Andrew West. Andrew had to play all afternoon and many different pieces, but he did a great job with lots of enthusiasm! Following a lovely diner, we had a workshop ‘body mapping’ with famous Lea Pearson. She gave us more insight in how our muscles and nerves work. And how to use our bodies in a way that we can prevent injuries and can continue to play till old age. It has been fun to meet all the other flute players.

Monday July 26

The warming up section continued with exercises finally with our flutes. Our group was surprisingly well in tune without having tuned. We were now well prepared for the following rehearsals, practising hours or individual lessons. All over the building, even from the basement, you could hear flutes and all sorts of different pieces! The qartet by Gary Schocker we rehearsed is really a lovely piece – but we’ll have to work on the rhythm in the second movement… In the afternoon we had the first YIP ensemble rehearsal and immediately we felt like '12 Magic Flutes' – we are looking forward to the next days. It’s really fun! In the first masterclass with Emily we worked on pieces by Gordon Jacob, Mozart and Reinecke. We spend a lot of time on how the Mozart concerto should be played, especially in auditions.

After a short break we all headed to the ‘Koetshuis’ – a few lucky people with an umbrella – for the very first 2010 neflac flute orchestra rehearsal. It was wonderful to play under the direction of the famous conductors Emily Beynon and Jeroen Bron. With so much music in mind we were all very hungry and enjoyed a delicious diner with an 'interesting desert' (Hayden quote) The workshop of the day called ‘study and stage’ was given by Wieke. We learned a lot about our nerves, the brain, our circles,… and we hope we won’t spend to much time in 'distractionland'. At the end she introduced us to our new friend Bob, who always will be with us when we perform. He has to accept our friend request.

It is nice to see how a group of 30 flutists con live together like a happy family!!!

Tuesday July 27

This morning a sunny warming up. And after the lessons some precious time to enjoy the sun and practice outside under the trees.

Violonist Liza Ferschtman gave a special Masterclass to the YIP-class. Amongst them Rozemarijn: ‘It was very inspiring and lots of fun to get a lesson from a famous violinist. Of course we touched the musical part of playing and not the technical aspects that are specific for the flute. But that made it all the more special.’

The evening was for Roberta Alexander, giving the workshop 'Podium presentation'. Good fun! All students had to introduce themselves as if we were going to play a concert after introductions. Roberta gave us important tips, but she did in with lots of humor. We all can say our name now in a way that on stage also the last row can hear us loud and clear!

Ik ben nu voor de tweede keer op de Nederlandse Fluit Academie en het is net zo leuk als vorig jaar. Er zijn veel veranderingen, het is dus niet zo dat ik me dit jaar zit te vervelen. Zeker niet!

Ik heb m'n individuele lessen hier nu gehad. Die waren echt helemaal geweldig. Morgen heb ik Masterclass die ongetwijfeld hetzelfde uit zal pakken.

Het is alleen wel jammer dat ik ook dit jaar wéér de enige jongen in de TTK groep ben. Daar baal ik van, maar toch is het erg gezellig. Alles wat we hier leren is heel divers. Zo gaan we van genante warming-ups via podium presentatie workshop naar een workshop over historische fluiten. Allemaal heel leuk dus. Ik heb al veel zin in de concerten, leef er echt naartoe. Hopelijk komt er veel publiek!

This evening we had a workshop with Marten Root, baroque flute player. It was exciting, informative and impressive! He sketched the history and development of the flute as an instrument, showing us flutes from the Renaissance till the modern flute of today. It all started with a simple boxwood flute, developed into French and German baroque flutes, classical flutes til today's Böhmflute. We heard that even in Mozarts time there was already a flute with keys (4-8), but that he still composed for a flute with only 1 key. Besides, Berlioz has composed music that could only be played on the Germand Böhmflute and could not be played on the older French flutes with a different system. Therefore the conservatoire in Paris opened a 2nd class especially for the Böhmflute for students to learn to play on a flute with this entirely new system.

The development in the instrument is impressive and Marten Root gave a wonderful presentation and opened a whole new world for us. At the end he let us try all the special, historical and costly instruments he had brought with him. Wow, what a treat! We were so fascinated that we were hardly able to stop playing at the end of the evening.

We had a wonderful day today. It was Rachel's birthday, and she really appreciated everyone's kind birthday wishes.

The day started with the 'normal' warmups, which included writing our names using our bodies and playing complicated ball games!

The TTK's then learnt about different techniques for practicing scales. The YIPS discussed breathing into all the available spaces, and blowing from low down in the body.

After the warm-ups, Rosa practiced studies and lots of repertoire.

Rachel had a very interesting lesson with Emily, working on the Franck Sonata.

Before dinner, the flute orchestra rehearsed the Bach Suite in b minor, and the Jungle Dance for flutes and bottles!

We had a delicious dinner of fish followed by a lovely birthday dessert, complete with a sparkling candle.

After dinner, we had a fascinating workshop on historic flutes. We learnt about the flutes in the context of repertoire of the times. We had the chance to try the flutes, and listen to their unique and beautiful sounds. A lovely end to another fantastic day.

NEFLAC is echt geweldig ! Ik ondervind dat muziek maken meer is dan alleen maar je instrument bespelen. ook deze ochtend hadden we weer warm- up met Wieke. Zo'n creatieve opdrachten: namen schrijven met je hele lichaam, welke spelletjes ze in Nederland niet allemaal verzinnen. Daarna was er de TTK les, waarin we ons richten op techniek en toonladders. Stilaan begin ik er aan te wennen dat elke noot hier een letter krijgt zoals A, B, Fis, , in vergelijking met België waar we do, re, mi, , do gebruiken. Tot slot was er nog repetitie met het fluitorkest. Alle muzikanten samen : op de dwarsfluit , altfluit, basfluit en zelfs contrabasfluit. Deze laatste is onwaarschijnlijk! Ze is groter dan elke muzikant. Zelfs Thomas is kleiner, hoewel hij 1.92 meter is. Ik kijk al uit naar morgen!

Thursday July 29

This morning began different than all the others: we went out for a walk in the forest and did our warming-up between the trees, so the feeling of our feet connected to the forest ground was unique to any other day.

In the afternoon we had a very inspiring masterclass with the baroque-flute specialist Martin Root. He gave us a whole new outlook of playing Bach by giving us new ideas about articulation, harmonies and bass-lines. So it was a successful afternoon.

The evening was loud: we had a rhythm workshop with Niels van Hoorn. We sang African songs and let our energy out by playing all kind of drums.

Friday July 30

“Tsja Ke Tsja Ka - Tsja Ke Tsja Ka - Hoe!” were the first words said this morning when we began our warm up. If you attend one of our concerts you will find out exactly what this means. The YIP class then disappeared into the deep dark forest to the secret hide away place for a flute warm up session with Wieke and our dear BOHOOOB. The TTK class had a very hard flute warm up session practicing scales and arpeggios with Jeroen.

Today was Open Day for NeFlAc which created a very special atmosphere at Rhederoord. This allowed parents and teachers to attend and observe all activities throughout the day.

Emily presented two fantastic master classes today. The first was for the TTK class and the second for the YIP class. Her enthusiasm has been admirable and today was no exception. Everybody came away from her classes wanting more from this flute genius.

After dinner we ran through the concert program for Saturday and Sunday evening’s performances. The run through was challenging but everyone coped extremely well. We both agree that regardless of what happens the concerts will be a great success.

Saturday July 31

Concertday! But first business as usual with warming-up and lessons in the morning. In the bus to Park Sonsbeek for the Open Air Concert, we feel tension rise. Will there be an audience to listen to us? On arrival everything is ready: stage, sound etc. We unpack our flutes and do away with all we don’t need. Ready to go! We did not have to worry about the audience, a rough count says between 700 and 800! Wow!! The concert goes well and everybody is thrilled. In the evening the second concert at Rhederoord. Full house with 100 in the audience. That feels good. Again the concert goes well and we are rewarded with a good applause. Bravo!!

Zondag 1 augustus

Vandaag was helaas de allerlaatste dag van de Neflac 2010. Na de twee concerten van gisteren, mochten wij vandaag een half uurtje later opstaan, wat wij zeer op prijs stelden. Vanmorgen hadden we wel allemaal last van ontwenningsverschijnselen, want in de planning stond geen warming-up zoals wij van Wieke gewend waren. We beseften allemaal dat de warming up je wakker en fit maakt na korte nachten in deze hectische, maar leerzame week. Na het ontbijt gingen wij (on-opgewarmd) de bus in naar het concertgebouw voor de generale repetitie van het middagconcert. Om kwart over 2 begon het echte concert, het was super leuk om in de kleine zaal van het concertgebouw in Amsterdam te mogen spelen. Ikzelf vond dit het mooiste en leukste concert van de 3 , in zo’n mooie zaal met zoveel mensen dat geeft echt een enorme kick! Na afloop van dit mooie concert, kwam bij heel veel mensen het besef dat het echt afgelopen was. Na een bedankje, gingen bij sommige mensen de tranen toch echt wel even rollen. Dat geeft ook maar weer aan hoe een hechte groep we waren, hoeveel gezelligheid we hadden, hoeveel we hebben geleerd en hoe leuk het was! Het échte afscheid kwam na de afscheidsborrel waarnaar wij met heel veel nieuwe inspiratie en kennis naar huis gingen tot mijn grote spijt. Ik heb heel erg van deze week genoten en ik hoop gauw op een reünie. Wie weet is Australië een mooie plaats? Tussen de kangoeroes? Dat is vast ook heel inspirerend en talent bevorderend, al kan er natuurlijk niets tippen aan ons geweldige (biologische) verblijf in Rhederoord!

We mochten uitslapen!!! Wel een HALF UUR! Omdat we een half uur later gingen eten. We aten met z’n allen in de grote zaal dit keer. De zaal waar ook de workshops en masterclasses werden gegeven. Met z’n allen zongen we Happy Birthday, omdat het ook nog eens de verjaardag van Andrew West was! Onze geweldige pianist. Na het eten moest iedereen zijn naam stiekem nog even op de ‘Bedankt!’ briefjes schrijven, die waren uitgeprint voor Rhederoord, Niels van Hoorn (workshop ritme), Andrew West (pianist), Suzanne Wolff en de drie docenten (Jeroen Bron, Wieke Karsten en natuurlijk Emily Beynon).

Iedereen had zijn bagage al buiten naar de bus gebracht, zodat we alleen nog maar in de bus hoefden te stappen. Maar we moesten eerst nog even onze oranje NeFlAc-shirt aan trekken voor de foto. We gehoorzaamde en Suzanne zocht een geschikte plek voor de foto. Natuurlijk net die plek waar we tegen de zon in keken! Na de foto, die iemand van Rhederoord gemaakt had zodat Suzanne er ook nog op kon, gingen we met z’n allen de bus in. De reis duurde 1½ uur. Tijdens de reis waren er een paar mensen in slaap gevallen, maar achterin de bus was iedereen nog klaar wakker!

Rond 11 uur kwamen we eindelijk bij hét Concertgebouw aan. Er werd verteld hoe we, met bagage, naar de artiesten ingang moesten lopen. We gingen naar een kamer waar een bordje voor stond ‘opslag bagage NFA’. Dat was natuurlijk wel leuk om te zien! Iedereen moest zijn concertkleding aan doen en vervolgens, met fluit en muziek, naar de Kleine Zaal toe, waar het om 14.15 allemaal ging gebeuren! We gingen het hele programma nog een keertje doornemen. Daarna hadden we de lunch in de Artiestenfoyer. Heerlijk eten hadden ze daar! Na de lunch was het zo ver! Het concert waar we de hele week naartoe geleefd hadden.

Toen we met z’n allen het podium op liepen, om Holberg te spelen, zag iedereen hoe vol de zaal was! Hierna kwam Lucia Aerden met haar solo. Helemaal happy kwam ze weer terug, alles ging goed! Na Lucia kwamen de 12 YIP-ers met die Zauberflöte. Toen was het de beurt aan Katinka Nelemans, die heel erg zenuwachtig was, met haar solo. Ook zij heeft prachtig gespeelt! Na Katinka verscheen het hele orkest weer op het podium. Arrival of the Queen of Sheba van Händel was het stuk dat gespeeld werd, met de solisten Wieke Karsten en Jeroen Bron. Kees van der Heijdt was de volgende die het podium op moest met zijn aparte trein-stuk! Nadat hij de zaal de andere kant van de fluit heeft laten horen, kwam het orkest weer met de Polonaise, Menuet en de Badinerie van de Suite in b-klein van Bach. Hierin speelde Emily Beynon de solo. Na de betovering van Emily kon iedereen even uitrusten in de pauze. De TTK-ers moesten 5 minuten eerder terug zijn om te stemmen voor de Pavane van Fauré. Hierna was het de beurt aan Marta Somodi met haar solo. Toen Marta haar solo had gespeeld kwam het hele orkest weer op inclusief Niels van Hoorn, die de percussie verzorgde. We speelden de Jamaican Rhapsody (Bananabootsong). Annemarie Burnett verzorgde de laatste solo. Nog één keer volgde het hele orkest met de Jungle Dance, waar ook Niels van Hoorn in mee deed. Na het grote applaus van al het publiek keerden we na 3x buigen weer terug naar de plek waar we hadden uitgepakt. Snel legde iedereen zijn fluit ergens neer en maakte zich klaar voor de improvisatie van Niels, ook dit werd een groot spektakel!

Toen we onze fluit eindelijk gingen inpakken werden de cadeautjes gegeven voor de leiding. Alle TTK-ers en YIP-ers hadden geld bij elkaar gelegd zodat één van de ouders de cadeautjes kon kopen. Voor de vrouwen (Emily, Suzanne en Wieke) een CD van Bob Marley (heeft uitleg nodig), handcrème en chocola. Voor de mannen (Jeroen, Andrew en Niels) 2 wijnglazen, wijn en chocola. Ze waren er heel blij mee.

Na het geweldige concert was er nog een afscheidsborrel in het Concertgebouwcafé. Ten slotte nam iedereen afscheid van elkaar en ging terug naar huis. Het was een geweldige week!
